Although there are hardly any doubts that Indian long product prices have touched the bottom in last few months, some market players in the secondary sector do not seem to be optimistic of sustainability. The increase in long product prices is propelled, to some extant, by the higher input costs as reflected in sponge iron and pencil ingot. Incidentally iron prices have also surged by about 6% on September opening in Barbil belt of Orissa The expectation of increase in construction activity, post rainy season, coupled with the recovery in prices in last 20 days catapulted some of the Indian steel majors to look for better realization in September. As a result, despite sluggish sales, they either rolled over the prices or sought hike of up to INR 1000 per tonne for deliveries in September. Market players opine that the input cost pressure, amid sluggish demand for finished product, has very severely impacted their conversion margins and only respite is possible if the demand really surges resulting in better realization for finished products. But a section of people are not so optimistic on the demand revival and feel that the downward pressure, being exerted by huge overcapacity, is far more greater than any possible upward push by demand revival and the market situation will remain as it is. In case of flat products, Indian steel majors hiked the prices by INR 750 per tonne to INR 1500 per tonne for sales in September. This has been reflected in the hike in market prices across the country as it is likely to stick. The fall in flat product prices in previous months was a result of lowering of prices by importers to liquidate their positions and generate cash. It appears that the inventories of unsold imported cargos at port have come down substantially and as such importers have once again become positive as the international price levels have surged off late. It is reported that Chinese mills are offering boron added HRC in SS 400 grade at USD 600 FOB, which translates to about USD 640 CFR India or say INR 32,000 landed without CVD and SAD. This has given ample scope to Indian steel mills to go for a hike despite holding huge inventories. The Indian Long Product Price Index ILPPI continued inclining by 19 points whereas Indian Flat Products Index IFPPI surged by 122 points. The overall price index INDSPI up by 68 points.
